OptinMonster makes it easy to connect with one of our many native integrations. Seamless integration with many Email Service Providers (ESPs) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) tools is available.

In this article, you’ll learn how to get started connecting OptinMonster to an Email Service Provider.

Before you start, as a best practice we recommend you also connect your campaigns to Monster Leads as a backup.

Some integrations require a minimum subscription plan. Check the ESP’s dedicated guide for the minimum plan requirement.

Add Integration

When you create a campaign in OptinMonster that you intend to collect leads with, you’ll want to integrate with one or more services to send those leads to.

To get started connecting to an Email Service Provider, navigate to the Integrations view of the campaign builder, search for and select your Email Service Provider.

Add your Email Service Provider to OptinMonster.

For a full walk-through of connecting OptinMonster with your specific Email Service Provider, please see the dedicated guide for that ESP.

FAQs

What Email Service Providers do you directly connect with?

A full list of Email Service Providers we integrate with can be found here.

Don’t see your ESP available? You can get started today using Monster Leads, our internal lead storage option. We also provide custom HTML form, Webhook, Zapier, WPForms, and Shortcode options!

How can I prevent spam submissions?

We automatically incorporate a honeypot field when using our native ESP integrations.

You can also configure Google reCAPTCHA following this guide.

Our Lead Verification addon feature also allows you to configure special rules for lead capture.

Can I prevent free email leads from being captured, or use other rules to control what leads come through?

Yes, our Lead Verification addon feature allows you to configure special rules for lead capture.

Does OptinMonster automatically store my lead data?

If you have connected your campaign to any of our third-party integrations, leads are passed directly to that platform. OptinMonster will only directly capture and store leads if you have integrated your campaign with Monster Leads, our internal lead storage.

OptinMonster makes it easy to update the details of your existing email marketing integrations or reconnect them whenever issues arise.

In this article, you will learn how to update or reconnect any of your existing integrations.

Before You Start

Here are some things to know before you begin:

  • As a best practice, we recommend you also connect your campaigns to Monster Leads as a backup.
  • Updating your integration should not be necessary after connecting to OptinMonster for the first time. In the event that updates are needed (for example, if your access token has expired) these steps will allow you to make global updates to your integration without the need to manually update each campaign it is connected to.
  • We recommend testing the updated connection by submitting a campaign form using a unique email address (never before used) to confirm it is working normally.

Update an Integration

Updating your integration allows you to modify existing details, such as API keys, to ensure a smooth connection between OptinMonster and your integration connection.

To update an integration, follow these steps:

  1. From the OptinMonster Dashboard, navigate to the Account > Integrations page. You can access this page by clicking on your Account Name in the top right corner, then select Integrations from the dropdown menu.
  2. The Integrations page displays all the integrations that are connected to your OptinMonster account under My Integrations. Find the integration that you would like to update and click the Configure button below it.
  3. Your integration will then expand and show all the different connections you have to that particular integration. To update a specific integration connection, select the Edit button next to it.
  4. Here you can update the integration name. Additional options available for updating the integration will depend on the specific platform. You may see an option for updating the API Key, reconnecting via O-Auth, etc. Please refer to our direct guide for the specific integration you’re updating for additional details.
  5. After you’ve finished, click the Update Integration button.

Reconnect an Integration

Reconnecting an integration helps restore a disrupted connection with OptinMonster without the need to add a new integration connection from scratch.

To reconnect an integration, follow these steps:

To reconnect a specific integration connection, select the Edit button next to it.
  4. To reauthorize the connection, click the Register [Integration Name] button. The button text will vary depending on the specific integration, such as Register Google Analytics. Please refer to our direct guide for the specific integration you’re reconnecting for additional details.
  5. After you’ve finished, click the Update Integration button.

FAQs

What’s the difference between updating and reconnecting an integration?

Updating an integration allows you to modify existing integration details, such as the API key. Reconnecting an integration re-establishes a connection after it has been temporarily disconnected, for example, due to network issues, API downtime, or account configuration changes.

How can I know if I need to reconnect my integration?

You may need to reconnect an integration if:

  1. You see an error message such as There was an error verifying your authorization token. Please generate a new authorization token and try again, indicating the integration is not working as expected.
  2. You have made changes to the integration’s API credentials.
How can I test my campaign after updating or reconnecting the integration?

Once you edit your integration, you can test your connection by submitting the campaign form using a unique email address (never before used) to confirm it is working normally. You can follow our guide here on how to test your campaign.

What happens if I delete an integration instead of updating or reconnecting it?

If you delete an integration, it will automatically be removed from any campaigns that were using it. You will need to edit individual campaigns to add a new integration.

There are different reasons you may want to use single opt-in or double opt-in for subscribing leads.

In this article, you’ll learn the difference between double and single opt-in and how to configure both for your email service provider.

Before You Start

Single opt-in is when a visitor submits their email address and they are immediately added to the email list and can begin receiving emails you send.

Double opt-in is when a visitor needs to confirm their email by selecting a link in an email they receive before they are added to your mailing list.

Pros and Cons

Single Opt-In

Pros of using single opt-in

  • All leads are added to your list immediately.
  • Because they are added immediately you can begin delivering content to them more quickly.

Cons of using single opt-in

  • You may end up with more low-quality leads.
  • Your list can contain incorrectly typed or fake emails. Having types of leads in your list can affect how accurate the email open rate reports are for your email campaigns.
  • Based upon GetResponse’s findings, you can have better overall email marketings stats by using double opt-in instead of using single opt-in.

Double Opt-In

Pros

  • Leads are typically higher-quality and result in a better email open rate for your email campaigns.
  • No mistyped or fake emails are added to your list because a valid email is required before the lead can confirm their subscription.
  • A healthier email list that gives you more accurate statistics.

Cons

  • Possible that the lead forgets to confirm their subscription, or the confirmation email ends up in their spam folder.

Which solution works best for you depends on your business plan and marketing strategy. There is no perfect hard and fast rule.

For more details and tips on which you should use, see our article Double Opt-In vs. Single Opt-In: Which Is Better for Conversions?

OptinMonster makes it easy to send your leads to multiple Email Service Providers from a single campaign.

In this article, you’ll learn how to send lead data to multiple providers using OptinMonster’s Lead Sharing feature.

Before you start, this feature is available with a Pro and higher subscription.

Before You Start

It is a good idea to have a backup of your leads in case one system fails, or temporarily goes down.  As a best practice, we recommend you connect your campaigns to Monster Leads as a backup to your main integration.

Many businesses use a separate database for organizing their sales leads and their newsletter subscribers. Both platforms are connected as separate integrations so that each new lead can be sent to both lists at the same time.

Another reason one might use multiple integrations for a campaign is to add leads to multiple segments within a main list. Many publications like to segment their leads based on interests, to receive targeted offers or updates.

Connect Multiple Integrations

Follow the steps below to send the leads you gather with an OptinMonster campaign to multiple integrations:

  1. From the Integrations view of the campaign builder, search for and configure the first Email Service Provider integration you would like to send leads to. We provide detailed guides for all marketing platforms we integrate with.
Begin configuring your OptinMonster integration by searching for the Email Service Provider you'd like to integrate with.
  2. Once you’ve configured your first integration, select the Add a New Integration button in the left sidebar to add another integration.
    Add new integration in OptinMonster.
  3. When you’re finished, Save the campaign.

FAQs

How can I delete an integration from my campaign?

From the Integrations view, select the trash icon next to the integration you would like to delete.

Remove an integration from the OptinMonster campaign.

Please note that this only removes the integration from the individual campaign but does not delete it from your OptinMonster account.

You can edit or fully delete an integration from your OptinMonster account through your Account > Integrations page.

Is there a limit to the number of integrations I can add to a single campaign?

No, you can add as many integrations to a single campaign as you need.

Troubleshooting

The campaign is capturing leads but shows 0 conversions in analytics.

Confirm that conversion tracking is turned on for the submit button in your campaign. See our guide on How to Enable Conversion Tracking.

Why can’t I select the Custom HTML integration option when adding another integration to my campaign?

Custom forms are now added using the Form Embed Block in the design view of the campaign builder!

Follow our guide to add a custom form to your OptinMonster campaign.

OptinMonster makes it easy to collect and store leads using our Monster Leads feature. Whether you’re starting from scratch, or securing a backup, Monster Leads is where you can store your lead data.

In this article, you’ll learn how to connect Monster Leads with OptinMonster.

Before You Start

Here are some things to know before you begin:

  • As a best practice, we recommend you connect your campaigns to Monster Leads and a second Email Service Provider (like Constant Contact or Mailchimp, etc) to manage and send emails to your leads.
  • Monster Leads only stores your leads but is not able to send any emails.
  • We recommend using tags for each campaign to help distinguish which campaign your leads subscribed through. This can help you with segmenting your leads.

Connect Monster Leads

When you create a campaign in OptinMonster that you intend to collect leads with you’ll want to integrate with one or more services to send those leads to.

To send leads to Monster Leads, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Integrations view in the campaign builder, search for and select Monster Leads.
Select Monster Leads to integrate with OptinMonster.
  2. Optional: Enter a Monster Leads Account Name (*internal use only).
Give your Monster Leads integration a name.
*By default, it will be populated with the Campaign Title. The Monster Leads Account Name can be anything that helps you identify the specific campaign your leads were captured with.
  3. Optional: You can customize the Notifications setting for your individual campaign to control how you’re notified by email of new leads.
Configure notifications for Monster Leads integration.
    • Use Default Account Settings – this setting will default to the Notifications option selected in the Account Integrations setting for Monster Leads
    • No Notifications – no emails will be sent
    • Every New Lead – an email will be sent for each individual lead captured
    • Daily Digest – one email will be sent per day showing all leads captured during a 24-hour period
    • Weekly Digest – one email will be sent per week showing all leads captured during a 7-day period

*When choosing Every New Lead, Daily Digest, or Weekly Digest you’ll be provided with a field to specify the email address(es) to send notification emails to. Type any valid email address into the field and press the Enter key to apply the setting. You can add as many email addresses as required.

  1. Optional: You can also assign Tags and configure the Store IP Addresses? (Turn off for GDPR) setting.
    Configure optional Monster Leads settings.
  2. When you’re finished, Save your campaign.

Add Extra Fields

Field Mapping

Get started using Field Mapping with Monster Leads.

Before you begin using Field Mapping with Monster Leads, please consider the following:

  • The following custom fields arereserved in Monster Leads and cannot be mapped to:
  • Custom field names should only contain uppercase ASCII characters and underscores. We automatically remove non-ASCII characters, hyphens, and empty spaces.
  • Custom field data can be located at the bottom of individual lead records when viewing Leads in OptinMonster.
View custom field data for a Monster Lead contact.

Lead Notifications

Lead Notifications can be configured for your default account settings, or for individual OptinMonster campaigns.

Monster Leads Notification emails are sent to the email address(es) specified when you configure Notifications for your individual campaigns and/or account default settings.

Please be sure to whitelist all emails from @optinmonster.com in your email application so they do not get blocked or filtered as spam.

Individual campaign Notification settings can be configured in Step 3 of the Connect Monster Leads section in this guide.

Default Notification Settings

To change the default settings for how often you receive Monster Leads Notifications, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to AccountIntegrations to manage your integrations.

    Configure Monster Leads
  3. Select Edit next to your Monster Leads integration.
    Edit Monster Leads Integration
  4. Choose the Notification option you prefer from the dropdown field.
    Monster Leads Notification Options
  5. When you’re finished, select the Update Integration to Monster Leads button.

The following Notification options are available to choose from:

  • Use Default Account Settings – this setting will default to the Notifications option selected in the Account Integrations setting for Monster Leads.
  • No Notifications – no emails will be sent
  • Every New Lead – an email will be sent for each individual lead captured
  • Daily Digest – one email will be sent per day showing all leads captured during a 24-hour period

*When choosing Every New Lead, Daily Digest, or Weekly Digest you’ll be provided with a field to specify the email address(es) to send Notification emails to. Type any valid email address into the field and press the Enter key to apply the setting. You can add as many email addresses as required.

Notification Email Examples

Every New Lead

When you receive a Monster Leads Notification for every new lead, it will contain:

  • Lead Data
    • Email address (always required)
    • Any additional fields in the campaign (e.g. name, phone, etc)
    • Coupon Code and Coupon Label if using a spin-a-wheel gamified campaign
  • Form – OptinMonster campaign title
  • Date Received – timestamp will be in GMT
  • Referring Page – Title and URL of the page where the OptinMonster campaign was submitted
  • IP Address – if IP Address storage is enabled for your integration, and the IP Address was available to be captured

Daily and Weekly Digest

Digest Notifications are sent daily, or weekly on Mondays.

When you receive a Monster Leads Digest Notification (daily or weekly), it will contain:

  • Lead Data
    • Email address (always required)
    • Any additional fields in the campaign (e.g. name, phone, etc)
    • Coupon Code and Coupon Label if using a spin-a-wheel gamified campaign
  • Form – OptinMonster campaign title
  • Date Received – timestamp will be in GMT

Email Automations

Monster Leads is a lead storage option only, and no emails are sent to leads.

To send automated emails to new leads you’ll want to integrate your campaigns with a third-party Email Service Provider and configure automated emails through that platform.

See all of the Email Service Providers we integrate with here.

If you don’t find your Email Service Provider listed, we also integrate with Zapier, Webhook, and our Form Embed block allows you to add webform embed codes from any platform.

Spin-a-Wheel Support

If you are configuring a Gamified spin-to-win campaign, spin-a-wheel support is not available at this time to store the coupon data in Monster Leads.

However, the coupon data will be sent with the lead data in email Notifications if you have Notifications enabled.

View / Export Leads

OptinMonster App

  1. To view your leads in OptinMonster, navigate to the Leads > Monster Leads page.
  2. You’ll now see a list of all leads. From this screen, you can view individual lead details, filter, and export your leads.
  3. To export leads from Monster Leads, click the Export dropdown. Here you can choose which data to export with your leads, and the file format of your export.
  4. When you’re ready to export, click the Apply button.

If you are exporting a very large list of leads (more than 25,000 at a time), instead of an instant download, you’ll see a small window pop up with two choices:
export leads modal

No, I want to narrow the results first: Clicking this lets you add more filters to your search. This helps you shrink the list so you can download it right away.
Please note that even if you add additional filters, you won’t be able to export the leads immediately unless the total count is 25,000 or fewer. Otherwise, this modal will continue to appear.
Yes, send me an email with the exported file: If you click this, we’ll prepare your export file in the background and send you an email with a secure download link as soon as it’s ready. This way, you don’t have to wait on the page!

If your export fails to download automatically, you may need to check your browser’s settings to be sure the browser isn’t blocking the file download.

WordPress Plugin

  1. To view your leads in the OptinMonster WordPress Plugin, first navigate to the OptinMonster > Subscribers page from the side panel menu.
  2. From this page, click Contacts and now you’ll see a list of all leads. Now, you can view individual lead details, filter, and export your leads.
  3. Click Export to export your leads
  4. Choose to export all of your leads or the leads you have selected and click Next.
  5. Filter what data you would like to be exported.
  6. When you’re ready to export, click the Export button.
  7. Your leads will be automatically downloaded.

All new campaigns associated with that domain will now automatically integrate with Monster Leads by default.

Does OptinMonster collect lead data without MonsterLeads connected?

If you have connected your campaign to any of our third-party integrations, leads are passed directly to that platform. OptinMonster will only directly capture and store leads if you have integrated your campaign with Monster Leads, our internal lead storage.

Can notifications be sent to multiple email addresses?

Yes! You can add as many email addresses as you’d like to receive lead notifications.

How many leads can Monster Leads store?

There is no limit to the amount of leads that can be stored within Monster Leads!

How quickly are leads sent to Monster Leads? Is there a delay?

There is no delay. Lead submissions are sent to Monster Leads in real time. OptinMonster will not perform the Button Action (like showing a success view or redirecting the user) until we get a confirmation that the submission was successfully received.

Even if your campaign is integrated with multiple Email Service Providers (ESPs) at the same time, OptinMonster sends the lead data to all connected integrations simultaneously, without delay.

Why doesn’t my conversion count match the number of leads in Monster Leads?

It is normal for these numbers to differ. There are some reasons for a discrepancy between the conversion count in OptinMonster and the lead count in Monster Leads:

  • Existing Subscribers: OptinMonster records a conversion each time a form is successfully submitted, provided that conversion tracking is enabled on the submit button. However, if an existing subscriber fills out your form again, Monster Leads will not create a new entry, but instead update the existing lead record.
  • Tracking on Other Elements: Conversions can be tracked on various elements, not just the form submission button. For example, if you have conversion tracking enabled on an image link and a visitor selects it but does not fill out the form, OptinMonster will still count a conversion. This increases your conversion count without a lead being submitted.
  • Lead Filtering: When a user signs up with a disposable email address or is flagged as suspicious, the campaign will still record a conversion (form submission), but Monster Leads may reject or filter out the lead.
The conversion count doesn’t match the number of leads in Monster Leads. Which one should I rely on for an accurate lead count?

For the total number of form submissions, use the conversions count. For a count of valid, unique, and saved leads, refer to the Monster Leads count. It provides a clearer view of leads that are actually usable.

My campaign is connected to both Monster Leads and another integration. If a conversion appears in Monster Leads, does that mean the lead was successfully sent to other integration?

Not necessarily. Monster Leads acts independently of your other integration. It captures leads regardless of your other integration connection status. You’ll need to check your other integration separately to ensure leads are flowing there.

Troubleshooting

The campaign is capturing leads but shows 0 conversions in analytics.

Confirm that conversion tracking is turned on for the submit button in your campaign. See our guide on How to Enable Conversion Tracking.

Creating forms is easy using our drag-and-drop editor, and connecting forms to the most popular Email Service Providers (ESP) is too. But sometimes, you may need to use a custom form you’ve created yourself outside of OptinMonster, or to integrate with an email marketing platform we don’t yet support. Our Embed Form block is perfect for embedding an HTML or Javascript form into your OptinMonster campaign.

In this article, you’ll learn how to embed any HTML form into an OptinMonster campaign using the Embed Form block.

Before You Start

Are you looking to add extra fields to your optin form and prefer to use one of our native Integrations?

Field Mapping is a brand-new feature available for our most popular Email Service Providers. You can easily add radio buttons, phone fields, text areas, number fields, lists, and more!

Custom HubSpot forms must be edited following this guide to function correctly.

Custom Marketo forms must be edited following this guide to function correctly.

Your custom form’s styling may need to be controlled using Custom CSS.

Embed Form

To add an HTML form to your OptinMonster campaign, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Design view of the campaign builder.
Design view of the campaign builder.
  2. If your OptinMonster campaign already contains a Fields block, you’ll need to delete it.
Delete any existing Fields block from the campaign.
  3. You can now drag the Embed Form block into your campaign’s design where you want to show the HTML form.
Add an Embed Form block to your OptinMonster campaign.
  4. In the left sidebar panel the Embed Form block settings will provide a field for you to paste your HTML form’s embed code into.
Add your HTML form embed code to the settings panel.
  5. Optional: You can configure additional styling settings for the Embed Form block in the Advanced tab of the left sidebar panel.
Advanced settings for the Embed Form block.
  6. Recommended: Update your HTML form embed code following the next section in this guide to track conversions and set cookies (to control how often the campaign can reappear).
  7. When you’re finished, Save the campaign.

Form Events

Conversions and Cookies

There are two options to track conversions and set cookies when your custom HTML form is submitted:

  • Using Javascript (recommended, most accurate method)
  • OR adding a class to the form’s submit button

Whenever possible, you should use the Javascript method below on your form’s success callback so that the conversion is only accurately recorded when your form is successfully submitted.

If your custom HTML form is using Javascript on the submit event, then you’ll want to ensure that the last line of the Javascript submit code is:

Notice: If you are doing any redirect if the submission is successful on your customized submission Javascript code, then there is nothing OptinMonster can do to track the conversion.

Javascript

Use the following Javascript on your form’s success callback so that the conversion is only accurately recorded when your form is successfully submitted:

Button Class

Note:

Be aware that this method can result in false conversions being counted. Using the button class will count any click event on an element containing the class as a conversion.

If you add this to a submit button, for example, and the form fails to process successfully on the first click, it will still be counted as a conversion! Whenever possible, you should use the Javascript method provided above for the most accurate tracking.

There is a particular class that you can use to notify OptinMonster that a conversion has happened and set cookies if they’ve been configured for your campaign.

Add the class om-trigger-conversion to your custom form’s submit button. For example:

Interactions

Separate from conversions, you can also count form interactions and pass that data to Google Analytics.

Success Actions

You can customize the success action for your embedded form to change the campaign view or close the campaign.

Change View

Use one of the following Javascript examples on your form’s success callback to change to the specific campaign view you’d like to display on submission:

Close Campaign

Use the following Javascript on your form’s success callback to close the campaign on submission:

Form Validation

You may wish to validate the fields in your embedded form but aren’t sure where to begin.

The following are examples of validating an HTML form to help you get started.

These examples should not be used as-is but edited to fit your particular needs.

Javascript Validation Example:

The following code provides an example of Javascript validation for an HTML form:

Javascript Validation with AJAX Example:

FAQs

How can I control the styling of my custom form?

Custom HTML forms do not automatically inherit the default styling of your optin template. You can control the appearance using Custom CSS.

My custom form is in an iFrame element. Can I still track conversions?

Due to the nature of iFrame elements, it is not possible to track clicks that take place within the iFrame element.

This is a limitation of technology and not unique to OptinMonster.

Whenever possible, you should use an HTML or Javascript form embed option if one is provided to you, instead of an iFrame embed.

I’ve added the Embed Form block to my campaign, but the Integrations view in the builder is now disabled; why?

It is not possible to add a custom HTML form and connect with our native Integrations in a single campaign. If the Embed Form block is added to your campaign the Integrations view will be disabled. To resume using a native Integration you’ll need to first delete the Embed Form block from your campaign.

Why are my inline comments being wrapped by multi-line comments?

OptinMonster will wrap all inline comments into multi-line comments, which is necessary for OptinMonster’s proper handling and processing of the code involved.

For example, this:

// Your Comments

becomes this:

/* // Your Comments */

Troubleshooting

I’m using the Button Class to track conversions but the number of conversions does not match the number of leads captured. Why?

Using the Button Class method can result in false conversions being counted.

The Button Class will count any click event on an element containing the class as a conversion. If you add this to a submit button, for example, and the form fails to process successfully on the first click it will still be counted as a conversion!

Whenever possible you should use the Javascript method provided above for the most accurate tracking.

My Javascript form isn’t working; why?

Javascript-based forms are supported. However, a Javascript error in your form code may break your OptinMonster campaign. If that happens, please be sure to reach out to support for assistance.

My form isn’t submitting.

Check that the <form> tag in your embedded form code doesn’t contain the attribute target="_blank".

Browsers have inconsistent support for this action (redirecting the visitor after form submission in a new tab/window), and many will block it outright. This makes it appear your form is somehow broken. If your form contains this attribute, you can safely remove it and check again that the form submits appropriately.

It’s easy to integrate WPForms with your OptinMonster campaigns to create custom forms, surveys and more!

In this article, you’ll learn how to connect OptinMonster with WPForms.

WPForms is a form-building plugin for WordPress. Both the free and paid versions of WPForms are compatible with this guide.

Before You Start

Before you start, it is necessary to install and activate the WPForms plugin on your WordPress website.

You will be required to have created at least one form in the WPForms plugin that you intend to add to your OptinMonster campaign following this guide.

Connect WPForms

To connect OptinMonster with WPForms, follow these steps:

  1. Create at least one form in WPForms.
  2. Next, in the Design screen of the OptinMonster campaign builder, drag and drop a WPForms block into the campaign design where you want it to appear.
WPForms Block in the OptinMonster campaign builder.
  3. In the left sidebar, choose the WPForms form you’d like to display in your OptinMonster campaign. Only published forms in WPForms for the site that is connected to your campaign will be available in the dropdown.
Select the WPForms form you'd like to display in your campaign. - OptinMonster
Important: the WPForms form you select will not show in the campaign builder. This is expected and normal behavior. You will need to view the campaign directly on your site to see the form within it.
  4. When you are finished, Save your campaign.

Conversion Tracking

Conversion tracking is automatically enabled for the WPForms block and cannot be disabled at this time.

Success Action

When someone submits a WPForms form, the campaign will automatically show its Success view. Right now, there is no option to change what happens after the form is submitted.

By default, when a user clicks the Submit button, the entire page refreshes. This refresh helps make sure the form entry is saved, notification emails are sent, and other necessary processes are completed. However, the refresh can also cause the campaign to close, which might not be ideal.

If you want to keep the campaign’s Success view visible without refreshing the page, you can enable AJAX Form Submissions. This setting allows the form to process everything in the background without reloading the entire page. As a result, the Success view stays visible, creating a smoother experience for the visitors.

  • Inside the WpForms form builder, click on Settings in the left-hand menu.
  • Select General from the list of options.
  • Scroll down to the Advanced section.
  • Find the option Enable AJAX form submission and check the box next to it.
  • Click the Save button at the top right corner to apply your changes.

We recommend customizing the appearance of the Success view.

FAQs

Why doesn’t my WPForms form show in the campaign builder?

Because of the way the form is rendered by your site it is not possible to display a WPForms form outside of your site directly. As a result, the form will not show in the OptinMonster campaign builder.

We recommend using our preview and testing tools to see how the form appears in your campaign before publishing it.

I don’t like how my form appears, how can I change it?

The WPForms block itself provides the following styling options in the Advanced tab:

WPForms block advanced styling options.

To control the WPForms form elements’ appearance you’ll want to edit the form using the WPForms builder, or using Custom CSS.

Troubleshooting

The form doesn’t appear in the campaign builder, just the WPForms logo.

This is normal. The form will only be rendered when viewing the campaign on your site. We recommend using the preview option before launching your campaign.

The WPForms block is greyed out and I can’t add it to my campaign.

If the campaign is not yet connected to a WordPress site in the Publish screen, the WPForms block will not be available to add to the campaign.

Be sure to assign your WordPress site to the campaign in the Publish screen.

Assign site to your campaign in the Publish screen of the campaign builder.
I can’t select a WPForms form when configuring the WPForms block in OptinMonster.

This can happen for two reasons.

If you previously added a WPForms block to the campaign and later unassigned the WordPress site you’ll see the following notice when editing the WPForms block:

WPForms block no WordPress site assigned.

If this occurs you’ll need to assign your WordPress site to the campaign in the Publish screen of the campaign builder:

Assign site to your campaign in the Publish screen of the campaign builder.

If the dropdown is just empty with no warning, like this:

No WPForms forms available to select.

It indicates you do not yet have any published WPForms forms available.

You can publish a WPForms form on your site then configure the block in OptinMonster. Or, you can manually define the shortcode for your form by selecting the Add Shortcode Manually option from the dropdown and pasting your form’s shortcode into the provided field:

Manually add the WPForms shortcode into your OptinMonster campaign.

OptinMonster offers seamless integration with ActiveCampaign email marketing service. Connecting OptinMonster to your ActiveCampaign email list is very easy.

In this article, you’ll learn how to connect ActiveCampaign with OptinMonster.

Connect ActiveCampaign

When you create a campaign in OptinMonster that you intend to collect leads with you’ll want to integrate with one or more services to send those leads to.

To send leads to ActiveCampaign, follow these steps:

  1. Before you start, you’ll need your ActiveCampaign API URL and API Key. You can generate and copy the API URL and API Key from your ActiveCampaign account following this guide.
  2. Navigate to the Integrations view in the campaign builder, search for and select ActiveCampaign.
Search for and select the ActiveCampaign integration option in OptinMonster.
  3. Enter an ActiveCampaign Account Name (*internal use only), your ActiveCampaign API URL and ActiveCampaign API Key in the appropriate fields, then select the Connect to ActiveCampaign button.
Add ActiveCampaign API URL and API Key.
*The ActiveCampaign Account Name can be anything that helps you identify the specific integration within OptinMonster. It’s possible to add more than one ActiveCampaign integration to your account and this is an easy way to differentiate between them when assigning integrations to individual campaigns.
  4. Required: Once the ActiveCampaign integration has been connected select the ActiveCampaign List you wish to send leads to from the Email Provider Lists field.
Select the ActiveCampaign List to add leads to.
  5. Optional: You can also assign Lead Tags, select an Assigned Form*, and enable the Use Event Tracking? and Add Spin-a-Wheel Support? options.
ActiveCampaign Optional settings give you more control over how leads are added.
  6. When you’re finished, Save your campaign.

Assigned Form

Note:

When configuring your ActiveCampaign integration following the section above, you are provided the option to set an Assigned Form. This assignment will link leads captured to a specific form you’ve created in your ActiveCampaign account.

Assigned Form is required to be set if you plan to use email automations and/or double opt-in with ActiveCampaign.

Event Tracking

OptinMonster makes it easy to use ActiveCampaign’s Event Tracking feature with your campaigns.

To enable Event Tracking, follow these steps:

  1. Required: You will need to enable Event Tracking in your ActiveCampaign account and add ActiveCampaign’s tracking code to your site following this guide.
  2. Before you start, you will need your ActiveCampaign Event Tracking Account ID and Event Tracking Key. You can retrieve those from your ActiveCampaign account following this guide.
  3. Navigate to the Integrations view in the campaign builder and select your ActiveCampaign integration from the left sidebar.
Select the ActiveCampaign integration for your campaign.
  4. Next, enable the Use Event Tracking? option for your ActiveCampaign integration.
Enable Event Tracking for ActiveCampaign in OptinMonster.
  5. Enter the Event Tracking Account ID and Event Tracking Key into the appropriate fields.
Configure Event Tracking for ActiveCampaign in OptinMonster.
  6. When you’re finished, Save the campaign.

Test Event Tracking

When Event Tracking is working properly, leads added to your ActiveCampaign site through the OptinMonster campaign will show OptinMonster Lead under the Recent Activities column when viewing an individual lead’s details.

Add Extra Fields

Field Mapping

This integration supports Field Mapping, so you can easily add radio buttons, phone fields, text areas, number fields, lists, and more!

Before you begin using Field Mapping with ActiveCampaign, please consider the following:

  • The following custom fields arereserved in ActiveCampaign and cannot be mapped to:
  • Custom field names must only contain uppercase letters, no empty spaces or dashes allowed.
  • You can manage your custom fields in ActiveCampaign following this guide.

Form Embed Block

Alternatively, you can add any ActiveCampaign webform to your campaign using our Form Embed block.

Get started adding a custom form to your campaign.

Email Automations

To send emails automatically to new leads you’ll configure email automations within your ActiveCampaign account.

The following guides from ActiveCampaign may be helpful to get started:

Testing

We strongly recommend you test the optin form before publishing your campaign to ensure it is working as you expect.

Before you begin, please be aware of the following details when testing ActiveCampaign integrations:

  • Previously submitted or already subscribed leads may be treated differently by ActiveCampaign than new leads. For this reason, we recommend using a completely unique email address each time you test submit your campaign’s form. You can use a free tool like TempMail.io or learn how to create unlimited unique email addresses from a single Gmail account.
  • If the lead is captured in ActiveCampaign but you do not receive any automated emails it indicates the integration from OptinMonster to ActiveCampaign is correct, and the issue is with the automated email configuration. ActiveCampaign controls email automation exclusively. If you require assistance in troubleshooting email automations we recommend reaching out to ActiveCampaign support directly.

Get started testing with the Live Site Inspector tool explained in our guide on how to test an OptinMonster campaign.

Spin-a-Wheel Support

When configuring your ActiveCampaign integration following the first section in this guide, you are provided the option to enable Spin-a-Wheel Support.

This option is specific to Gamified spin-to-win campaigns. Enabling this option will pass the Coupon Label and Coupon Code to ActiveCampaign as custom fields with each lead.

To Enable Spin-a-Wheel Support, follow these steps:

  1. Required: navigate to your ActiveCampaign Dashboard > Lists > Manage Fields and add two new text fields with the following labels:

    • Coupon Code

    • Coupon Label

The Personalization Tags should look like %COUPON_CODE% and %COUPON_LABEL%.Personalization tags for coupon codes and labels in ActiveCampaign

  2. Next, navigate to the Integrations view in the OptinMonster campaign builder and select your ActiveCampaign integration from the left sidebar.
Select the ActiveCampaign integration for your campaign.
  3. Next, enable the Add Spin-a-Wheel Support? option for your ActiveCampaign integration.
    Add Spin-a-Wheel support to ActiveCampaign.
  4. When you’re finished, Save the campaign.

And that’s it! Now anytime someone uses your spin-a-wheel campaign that is connected with your ActiveCampaign integration, the winning coupon code and label will be associated with that contact, which can be used in follow-up emails, automation sequences and more!

FAQs

Can I send leads to more than one List?

Yes! See our Lead Sharing guide to accomplish this.

How do I configure single or double opt-in?

See our guide on single vs. double opt-in.

Is it possible for me to add a phone field to my campaign?

Yes! You can add a phone field. Learn how to capture phone numbers with OptinMonster.

What version of the ActiveCampaign API does OptinMonster use for its ActiveCampaign integration?

Currently, OptinMonster utilizes version 1 (v1) of the ActiveCampaign API.

How quickly are leads sent to ActiveCampaign? Is there a delay?

There is no delay. Lead submissions are sent to ActiveCampaign in real time.

Why doesn’t my conversion count match the number of leads in ActiveCampaign?

It is normal for these numbers to differ. There are some reasons for a discrepancy between the conversion count in OptinMonster and the lead count in ActiveCampaign:

  • Double Opt-In: If your email service is set to require double opt-in, a user must first click a confirmation link in an email before they are officially added to your list. OptinMonster records a conversion as soon as the form is submitted, but ActiveCampaign won’t count them as a new lead until they confirm.
  • Existing Subscribers: OptinMonster records a conversion each time a form is successfully submitted, provided that conversion tracking is enabled on the submit button. However, if an existing subscriber fills out your form again, ActiveCampaign will likely not add them as a new lead, as their email is already on your list.
  • Conversion Tracking Enabled on Other Blocks: Conversions can be tracked on various elements, not just the form submission button. For example, if you have conversion tracking enabled on an image link and a visitor selects it but does not fill out the form, OptinMonster will still count a conversion. This increases your conversion count without a lead being submitted.
  • Integration Failure: If the integration experiences a temporary issue, form submissions will still count as conversions. However, the lead data may not be sent to integration.
  • Lead Filtering: When a user signs up with a disposable email address or is flagged as suspicious, the campaign will still record a conversion (form submission), but your integration platform may reject or filter out the lead.

Troubleshooting

The campaign is capturing leads but shows 0 conversions in analytics.

Confirm that conversion tracking is turned on for the submit button in your campaign. See our guide on How to Enable Conversion Tracking.
